How a fan-powered cooling suit works
Dogs do sweat. The problem is that it can't evaporate.
Dogs and cats cool themselves mainly by panting — rapid, shallow breathing that evaporates saliva from the tongue. On a hot, humid day outdoors, that evaporation slows to a crawl. Body heat has nowhere to go.
So we looked at sweat instead. Dogs are often said not to sweat, but anyone who has felt a dog's coat after hard exercise knows otherwise. That moisture comes from apocrine glands across the body. The cooling mechanism is already there — the sweat simply sits deep in the coat, unable to evaporate.
What's needed isn't something cold pressed against the body. It's moving air through the coat. A small fan draws outside air in and creates a channel between the body and the fabric.
And because dogs walk close to the ground, they absorb far more radiant heat from hot pavement than we do. The longer the walk, the wider that gap grows.

Panting cools them
Rapid breathing evaporates saliva, and that evaporation carries heat away.

Heat and humidity stop it
In hot, humid air, evaporation slows. Sweat from the apocrine glands stays trapped in the coat.

A fan moves air under the garment, letting trapped heat and moisture escape. That is the whole idea.

The range
Three cooling suits, one fan system
The fan unit is shared across the whole range, so you can buy a second garment and move the fan between them.
Three years of doing this has taught us that dogs need different things. A short-nosed breed in July is not a long-coated dog in May. So the range splits by how much cooling you actually need, not by size alone.

Balloon Type
The newest one, and the cooling jacket you probably saw in the news. Fans mount on both flanks and lift the fabric clear of the body, holding open a channel of air. It inflates so that the air has somewhere to travel — then leaves by the collar and sleeves.
Inflating is the method. Air leaving the garment is the point.
There is a gel pocket at the collar, as on Skin Wear — and a second one inside the back. Load both, if your dog can carry the weight, and the whole inflated space becomes cold rather than merely moving: the same principle as our cooling mat, worn instead of lain on. Start with one and add the second only if they don't mind it.

Dog cooling suit size guide
Measure first. It matters more than breed.
Two dogs of the same breed can need different sizes. Measure your dog's neck, chest (the widest part of the ribcage) and back length (from the base of the neck to the base of the tail), then match against the table.
The fabric stretches, but a garment that is too large lets the fan shift out of position. If you fall between two sizes, choose the one closer to the actual measurement.

Weights and breeds are a rough guide only — two dogs of the same weight can be shaped very differently. The three measurements are what actually decide the fit, so please take them. Where a size shows two fans, two are included.
Between two sizes? Go up. There should be room for air to move — a garment pulled tight can't do its job. Still unsure? Send us your dog's numbers before you order. We'd far rather help you choose than process a return from overseas.
Fan jacket for owners
“Is there one for humans?”
It was the most asked question under the news coverage. Yes — and it came about in the honest order.
Owners kept telling us the same thing: the dog is comfortable now, but the person holding the lead is still standing in 35°C. Fan-equipped clothing already exists in Japan, mostly as workwear, and mostly looking like it. So we made one you'd wear to walk the dog and then keep on for the rest of the day.

A fan helps with heat. It does not prevent heatstroke. Stay with your dog while they're wearing it.
Start indoors, briefly
Let your dog get used to the garment and the sound of the fan before going out in it.
Never leave them unattended
Don't leave the garment on a dog who is home alone.
Stop immediately if you see
Heavy panting, excessive drool, unsteadiness, or reluctance to move. Get them somewhere cool and call a vet.
Avoid the hottest hours
On extreme days, skip the walk. Check the pavement temperature with your hand first.
Remove the fan before washing
Always take out the fan and battery housing first.
Water and shade still matter
Use it alongside frequent water breaks and time in the shade.

The original wearable fan for pets
COOL DOG® began with one dog.
Swan was a chihuahua — a large one, and by then an old one. Her summer walks got harder every year, and she came home flattened. Ice packs went warm within minutes. Shade ran out. She would walk a little, stop, and stand there. Our founder watched that small back stopping again and again and wanted to do something about it.
Fan-equipped workwear already existed in Japan — the jackets the press often call “air-conditioned” clothing, worn by construction crews all summer. There is no compressor in them and none in ours; a fan moves air, and moving air is what carries heat away. But nothing like it existed for a dog, so far as we could find. It couldn't simply be scaled down either: the body shape and the way a garment sits are completely different on four legs.
So it was built from nothing, with a veterinary surgeon looking over our shoulder. Fan placement, the path the air travels, weight, noise — each one tested against one question: would this be bearable for a small, elderly dog? The structure holds a Japanese utility model registration (no. 3236936).

Swan wore it for three summers — at fourteen, at fifteen, at sixteen. She stopped wanting it taken off. In 2024 she died. She was the dog our founder had the longest.
ONEKOSAMA OINUSAMA is a Japanese pet brand founded on life with rescued dogs and cats. It is part of Sweet Mommy Inc., a Tokyo company that has been making maternity and baby wear for around twenty years.
What began as one garment for one dog is now a range. The first model launched in 2022; the mesh type followed in 2023, the UV-protective Skin Wear in 2026, and the balloon type this summer. The fan unit has stayed compatible throughout, so a fan bought in 2022 still fits what we make today.
Where things are made: the fan units are manufactured in Japan. The garments are made in China, to our patterns and under our supervision. Design, development and veterinary review all happen in Tokyo. We'd rather tell you that plainly than let “Japanese brand” do work it shouldn't.
Reuters covered the range in 2022, and came back in August 2026 to film the balloon type — a fitting session at our Daikanyama store with customers and their own dogs and cats. Within days the story had run in Brazil, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Canada and the United States. It travelled further this time than it did in 2022.

Questions we're asked
Which one was in the news?
The Balloon Type — the one that puffs up when the fans run. Sizes 2L–5L are open for pre-order now and ship from 15 September; M, L and 6L–9L arrive from October. If you'd rather not wait, COOL DOG® runs S–9L and ships straight away.
Is there a version for people?
Yes — a unisex rash guard, built to be worn with the dog version. Stock arrives shortly and it ships from next week. It's further up this page.
Is this an air-conditioned suit? Does it blow cold air?
There's no compressor and no refrigeration, so not in the literal sense. What a fan does is move outside air through the garment, letting sweat and trapped heat evaporate away — and on a humid day that does less than on a dry one. Skin Wear and the Balloon Type go further: air passes a gel pack at the collar before it reaches your dog, so it arrives cold. The Balloon Type takes a second pack inside the back, which turns the whole inflated space cold.
Can I buy it in a shop in Japan?
Yes — at Sweet Mommy in Daikanyama, Tokyo, four minutes from Daikanyama Station and open daily 10:00–18:00. Around half our visitors there now come from abroad. Buying in person means no shipping, no battery restrictions, tax-free with your passport, and you can try the owner's rash guard on. Dogs and cats welcome in carriers.
How long will delivery take?
For in-stock items, allow a few days for the order to reach WorldShopping's warehouse in Japan, then international transit on top. The exact options and timings appear at checkout before you pay.
Will my dog be frightened by the fan?
Some are at first. Put the garment on with the fan switched off, let them wear it indoors, and only then start it on the lowest setting.
Does it work for cats?
If the size fits, yes — but many cats object to wearing clothing at all. Don't push it.
How long do the batteries last?
【TO FILL】Runtime by fan speed. All models run on ordinary dry cells — carry spares for longer outings. On the Balloon Type the battery pack sits in a back pocket, out of the way.
How do I choose between the three?
COOL DOG® is a breathable mesh, airflow only, and the everyday choice — it also covers the widest size range, S to 9L. Skin Wear adds a gel pack at the collar so the air arrives cold, plus UV and insect protection. Balloon Type moves the most air and takes two gel packs, so it goes coldest. In the worst of the heat, or for a dog who struggles, start there — if they're 2L or above.
Can I use it with a harness?
Depending on the harness, the back strap may sit over the fan. Check how yours is built, and reposition the fan if they overlap.
Can I exchange it if the size is wrong?
International orders are handled by WorldShopping, so returns and exchanges follow their policy — please contact them directly. Pre-ordered items can't be exchanged at all. Either way, measuring carefully first is much the easier path, and we're happy to help you choose.
